Julia Bollinger is a painter based in Virginia. After working as a printmaker in Colorado and traveling to study painting in Florence, Italy, and New York (and then living and working on various organic farms) she settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains where she now resides.
Julia paints the fauna and terrain of her home, going on wanderings to discover a scene that is in its seasonal or successional peak. These sessions are immersive and expansive experiences of wonder with the subject. The paintings are a remnant of her devotion for a place and building a relationship with the land.
Working from life with a time limit of a few hours to a few days gives a freshness and immediacy to the paintings that is impossible to capture otherwise. Tiny seeds and grass are sometimes encased in the surfaces, contained in the paintings like amber. She is humbled by the life forms and people that have been caretakers of her home over the centuries—enabling her to observe, record, and take part. Her work is held in private collections in the United States and Europe.
