Julia Bollinger uses automatic drawing to access forms and shapes that act as a map, cross-section, or proof from the living world. She unearths compositions through a meditative process, letting the movement of her hand and body be the guide. Her work is grounded by her time as a printmaker for Oehme Graphics working with contemporary artists such as Louise Fishman and John Walker, and balanced by her training in classical art in Florence, Italy. Interspersed throughout her artistic career she has worked on organic farms, and the relationship between sky, soil, plants, and bodies frequently appears in her pieces. Julia works and lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with her husband and daughter.
